Youth Programming

City Youth Academy

Every summer, ten young people ages 16–19 come together for a six-week civic and creative intensive exploring how stories can shape public life.

Working alongside Soulpepper artists, they are introduced to playwriting, scene study, ensemble creation, and music as tools to express big ideas. Participants practice how to articulate their thoughts clearly and confidently in public, how to listen and respond to others in real conversation and debate, and how to think critically about the narratives that shape their communities and their place within it.

Summer Mixtape

Originally developed in partnership with the Lifelong Leadership Institute, the Summer Mixtape program provides Black youth ages 14–19 with an exciting opportunity to experience the world of theatre creation from the inside.

Every summer, this 3-week intensive will help participants grow and build community in a cohort of emerging theatre creators. Participants will be invited to draw back the curtains and dive into storytelling and playwriting, collaborative creation, live performance, and more. All of this will be done by harnessing the power of theatre to tell stories rooted in both Canadian Black history and the present with lead instructor Khadijah Salawu.

Curtain Up

Curtain Up is a series of classes offered throughout the year, which allows youth ages 14–18 to specialize in the fields of playwriting, acting, music, movement, and more. Skilled artist instructors lead hands-on workshops to help youth explore their creative potential.
